STEFANO GRAZIA, fondatore e ideatore dell’Associazione MUSA, è stato uno dei primi in Italia a studiare Tabla e la musica classica Indiana. A partire dalla fine degli anni ’70 attraverso un percorso di 3 decenni, ha avuto diversi insegnamenti dai maestri più qualificati di varie tradizioni musicali (gharana) del Nord India quali Farrukabad, Delhi, Benares & Punjab.
Il suo primo insegnante nel 1979 è stato il grande maestro Pt. Sankha Chatterjee di Calcutta con il quale ha studiato per oltre 15 anni a Venezia (Fondazione CINI) Berlino e Calcutta. A partire dal 2005 ha intrapreso gli studi della Benares Gharana tramite il virtuoso di tabla della nuova generazione Shri Nihar Mehta e dal suo guru Pt. Pooran Maharaj uno degli esponenti più autorevoli di questa antica tradizione.
Dal 1999 ha iniziato l’attività concertistica, accompagnando numerosi musicisti indiani di fama internazionale in Italia, Francia, Svizzera, Germania, Belgio, Austria e Grecia in oltre 100 concerti. Suona regolarmente anche con il musicista europeo Mark Dyckowsky, con il quale ha eseguito una performance musicale in Piazza Maggiore a Bologna in occasione della serata commemorativa dedicata a Tiziano Terzani. Oltre a suonare con musicisti classici indiani è membro fondatore dell’ensemble italiano ANANKE con repertorio musicale ispirato alla tradizione ebraico-sefardita, tra le cui esibizioni si distingue quella al Festival Internazionale di Akko (Israele). Ha inoltre collaborato con il M° di flauto Massimo Mercelli e il M° di violino Diego Conti sui progetti ‘East meets West’.
Nel 2006 ha collaborato al progetto INDIA WORLD di Bologna in qualità di Direttore Artistico per gli spettacoli sull’India e sull’ Oriente. Nel 2009 ha partecipato al festival POIESIS di Fabriano nell’ambito del progetto ‘I Cieli della Terra’ dell’attore e regista Gabriele Parrillo. Nel 2010 ha dato vita all’ensemble RANJANI, danze e musiche del Nord India e nel 2013 ha preso parte al progetto KAJAL di musiche contemporanee ispirate al sud-est asiatico del Maestro di percussioni Simone Beneventi. Dal 2011 accompagna regolarmente il Maestro di Sarod PARTHO SAROTHY, nei suoi tour in Italia.
Nel 2012 e 2014 ha preso parte alla “Master Class” di Tabla di Zakir Hussain a Nizza organizzato dalla prestigiosa Saptak India di Shri Nihar Mehta.
Stefano Grazia, founder of the MUSA Association, was one of the earliest in Italy to study Indian Classical Music and Tabla. Starting from late 70 through a period of 3 decades, he got different teachings by most qualifies Maestros of different musical traditions (gharana) of North India such us Farrukabad, Delhi, Benares & Punjab.
His first teacher, in 1979, was the great Maestro Pt. Sankha Chatterjee of Kolkata, with whom he learned from more than 15 years, in Venice (CINI Foundation) Berlin & Kolkata. Starting from 2005 he began to study the Benares Gharana thanks to the tabla virtuoso of the new generation Shri Nihar Mehta and his guru Pt. Pooran Maharaj, one the the leading exponent of this ancestral tradition.
Since 1999 ha has started playing in concert, by accompanying several Indian musicians of international fame in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Austria & Greece in more than 100 concerts. He also plays regularly with the European musician Mark Dyczkowski, with whom he performed in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna on the occasion of the commemorative evening dedicated to Tiziano Terzani. Besides playing with Indian classical musicians he is a founding member of the ensemble ANANKE with musical repertoire inspired to the Jewish-Sephardic tradition. Among their several performances stands out the exhibitions at the International Festival of Akko (Israel). He has moreover co-operated with Flute master Massimo Mercelli & Violin master Diego Conti in the events ‘East meet West’.
In 2006 he has jointed the project INDIA WORLD in Bologna as Artistic Director for events on India & Far East. In 2009 he has taken part to the festival POIESIS in Fabriano inside the theatre piece ‘I cieli della Terra’ of the actor & director Gabriele Parrillo. In 2010 he started the Ranjani Ensemble – music & dance of North India e in 2013 he jointed the project KAJAL of contemporary music inspired to South_East Asia of the Percussionist Simone Beneventi. Since 2011 he plays also reguraly with the great sarod Maestro PARTHO SAROTHY, in his italian tours.
In 2012 & 2014 he was among the very few who had the privilege to be a ‘selective participant’ in the Master Class of internationally renowned Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain in Nice, France. (organized by Asso. Saptak-India of which Nihar Mehta is the Founder & President).
